The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of saliva contamination
and re-etching time on the bond strength when the acid-etching technique was used in
pedodontic treatment.
The shear bond strength of composite resin was tested with an Instron and surface
topography was examined with a SEM.
The results were as follows.
1. When etched enamel surface was contaminated with saliva for 30 seconds, adherent
surface coating was observed in SEM.
2. When contaminated enamel surface was re-etched for 10 seconds or longer,
adherent surface coating was removed.
3. The more the re-etching time was increased, the more the etching depth was
deepened.
4. Only the A group that were only washed with water showed significantly less
shear bond strength than control group.
5. There was no significant difference in the bond strength between 10, 20, 30 and
120 seconds re-etching time.
